For Caroline T. Dartey, the path to a professional dance career was anything but a straight line. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Dati was an accomplished rhythmic gymnast who competed nationally (she was the Swiss champion in the category from 2009-11) and internationally before leaving the sport to pursue a career in dance. A chance encounter with an attentive teacher at the Conservatory of Music, Dance and Theater in Geneva led Dati to turn her attention to concert dance and New York City: she joined Ailey in 2016 as a scholarship student School, and danced with Ailey II from 2018-20 and joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2021.
Whether on stage, in rehearsals, or in impromptu videos posted on Instagram, Duti dances with aplomb, making every move with care and precision. Her elegant extension and charisma look right at home in Ellie’s repertoire and will be on display in Paris when the company tours this month.

The lights were so bright you couldn’t see the audience, so you really just Feel like you’re in your own world, completely immersed in the character you’re playing.

There are so many people in the world who don’t have the opportunity to dance on a regular basis, so it’s great to offer dance to them. I especially hope to one day Back in Switzerland – maybe I can inspire young dancers there.

“I did a lot of dance industry gigs outside of the company, from commercial work and modeling to doing Late Night with Seth Meyers with Pheelz, because if I stayed in the bubble, I wouldn’t progress. It Helps me keep my mind active and helps me bring inspiration back to the studio when preparing for a new role – I keep all my experiences in my backpack so I can always use them.
