Lorenzo Accattoli had the pleasure of sitting down with AMP to discuss all things dye canvas.
AMP: Stain The Canvas is a fairly new group. How did the band come together?
Lorenzo: Me (Lorenzo), Riccardo and Luca have had our own pop punk/easycore band since 2013, but at the end of 2017 we wanted to do something different. So, we formed dye canvas I started writing new music. I no longer wanted to be the lead singer. So the band began to search for new singers across Italy through social networks, and found that Brian Matt was the best choice for the band.
The band is originally from the Marche region, but Brian lives in Lombardy. So we left our hometown and came to Milan to start a new life. In 2019, I was lucky enough to meet Alessandro because we studied in the same voice academy. He came on board as our drummer and the lineup ended up being complete. In the same year, we released our first single “Like a God”.
AMP: Your new single “Seal My Soul” is very powerful and has an important message. Can you give us some insight into the track?
Lorenzo: A few months ago, I was told that a friend of ours suddenly committed suicide. We used to hang out with a small group of friends and he was our favorite. I know it sounds cliché, but he was the master of humor in this little group. He was always cool and funny. I thought he was the last person who would have done what he did. I was devastated when I learned of his death.
Unfortunately, we have lost touch as we no longer hang out together like we used to. I don’t know what happened, but apparently no one does. He is very good at hiding his feelings. The least I could do was write a song dedicated to him and his memory.
AMP: What is the creative process like for the band?
Lorenzo: I basically locked myself in my room and lost some of my sanity. I then send my product/lyrics to others for approval.
AMP: For any orchestra, dynamics are an important key to capturing the audience’s attention. What do you think is the main motivation for your band?
Lorenzo: We think dynamics are basically the fulcrum of our musical style. We hate doing the same thing over and over again, even on the same album. When we make music, we want the listener to be surprised (but not in an extreme way) by what happens next. Atmosphere is important.
AMP: There seems to be a sink or swim mentality in the music industry today. Has this realism had any impact on the dynamics of the band?
Lorenzo: Yes, indeed. A few days ago I came across a meme that included this graphic showing the quality of life of the average producer. Basically, this states that quality of life is inversely proportional to the time since he started giving birth, and sadly, I found this to be true! Then I read some reviews. That’s when I read the biggest piece of crap I’ve read in a while: “If you don’t love what you do, it’s not your passion and you shouldn’t do it”.
I deeply believe that if it were not forced by external circumstances, no one would continue to do something they don’t like, especially in the field of art. I love what I do (making), but, of course, I don’t think of it as just a hobby but as a person who actually works. You have to deal with deadlines, writer’s block, and the fact that after all the struggles I’m currently still not where I want to be. So while the enthusiasm is still there, you also have to face, in a word, pressure, and that affects me and the rest of the band.
AMP: Do you feel that how fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately portrays your sound?
Lorenzo: Yes and no. For example, the “Seal My Soul” music video has a comment underneath it about how they appreciate the song because it adds depth to our sound. It shows that we’re not just another pure screamo band. To be honest, I don’t think we’re just a pure screamo band.
AMP: What is Italian rock music like? Do you support it?
Lorenzo: The situation in Italy is small but consistent and much less toxic than it was a decade ago. I would say the biggest scene was in Milan.
AMP: Which artist would the band be willing to collaborate with in the future?
Lorenzo: Yes, there’s a lot, but we won’t spoil it with any names this time. Sorry haha! We sometimes do spoilers like this in the Discord group (so be sure to join hehe :).
AMP: What has been the proudest moment in the band’s career so far?
Lorenzo: We have experienced some proud moments since our inception. First, it was the rapid international attention it gained among fans around the world, a rarity for an Italian band. Of course, we are proud to have had the opportunity to tour Europe with Attila and Call Me Karizma, perform at the Sziget Festival and most recently, we were invited to perform at the Resurrection Fest (see you on June 26th)!
AMP: What’s the next step for dyeing canvas?
Lorenzo: Of course, we’re still working on our third album and we’re super excited to showcase what we’ve been doing for (almost) three years here. Then, hopefully, touring, playing shows, meeting new and old fans. This is hands down the best part of our job.
