The venue was packed, 90% occupied. This is pretty impressive considering they just played The Amp in Bridgeport two months ago. Fans showed their enthusiasm and each member took their spot, but Macdonald took home the applause award.
As soon as they opened, they were greeted by stampede“Hold me in your arms (and shake me for a moment),” followed by two more minute by minute“Here to love you” and “Depend on you”. period rue toulouseIn “Rockin’ Down The Highway,” they show off classic videos of their youth on the big screen, hiding behind them their current selves. Simmons addresses fans “It’s a new song we just wrote for our new album that’s coming out early next year, a bluesy rock vibe, come with me on this journey.” Macdonald sings lead vocals on “Walk This Road,” which I believe was the title. this will be the first album doobie brothersReleased in forty-four years with Michael McDonald.
Next up is “Sweet Maxine.” The two fans behind us, Delta and Beth, kept saying “They are awesome!”. Guess where they come from. Macdonald keeps mic on end of “You Belong to Me” Living on the fault line. This was the original version before Carly Simon released her version. The song was co-written by Simon and McDonald. Next came the band introductions, and they saved drummer Toth until last, as he was only thirteen minutes away from the venue and had many supporters in the audience. Simmons announced “His mom is here tonight!”. Fans are going crazy! But once again, McDonald’s won the applause award.
Simmons continued. “Today is our 50th anniversary! We’re on our second fiftieth now. Thank you so much, it’s great to be back. This is a song I wrote when I was too drunk to see. It’s about being on the road. It’s “clear as driving snow” captain and me. There are chairs on the floor section so everyone has a seat. Another title track follows, this time “World Gone Crazy”, then “Without You”, and then one of my favorites, “Jesus Is Alright”. The band’s three-time Grammy Award-winning song “What A Fool Believes” won over most fans and left a lasting impression on the outro of “Long Train Runnin'” and “China Grove.”
After a reasonable pause and enough excitement from the crowd, doobie brothers Returning to the stage to bring fans the instrumental “Black Water” from the encore track “Amazing Grace” and the title track “Takin It To The Streets”. Simmons called Russo a daredevil as the saxophonist played a quick solo on the upper staircase. He rejoined the band on stage for the final song, “Listen To The Music,” and the fans nearly overwhelmed the band by singing along.
The sound quality is very good, but I found that the main melody sung by McDonald is difficult to identify, either it is slightly off, or the arrangement has been adjusted or something. His voice is unmistakable, but I see people’s brain mechanisms spinning trying to locate the song. I prefer tracks with Johnston or Simmons singing lead vocals. McDonald played keyboards and mandolin throughout the show, showcasing his other talents. I found Russo and his saxophone to be the highlight. I have to give these guys a little props, five of the eight members are in their seventies.
