Affirmation, especially for women, can feel challenging. We are taught to put ourselves last and put the happiness of others before our own. Maybe we even learn that seeing ourselves in a positive light is selfish or conceited. (Trust me, it’s definitely not.) But many of us have heard—whether it’s from well-meaning friends, therapists, or self-help books—that practicing in front of a mirror can definitely make a huge difference in our lives. Change. Even though the experience may feel weird or awkward, it’s true.
Behind these affirmation ideas is the science of self-affirmation theory. It asserts that when we tell (and repeat) our beliefs to ourselves, we can “preserve our sense of self-integrity.” But even with the science to back it up, I still feel impostor syndrome creeping in when I try to practice affirmations on my own. Who else?

The importance of affirming women
It’s normal to feel doubt when you tell yourself something that feels very untrue. For example, one day, everything seems to be going wrong, your hair is doing all kinds of strange things, pimples appear out of nowhere, saying “I experience beauty from within” might not feel real.
When we practice affirmations every day, we not only share words of kindness and love with ourselves, but we begin to believe them.
My advice? Feel it! Then take a step back and ask yourself where these emotions are coming from. Is it inner doubt or a feeling of comparison? Or maybe it was inspired by something someone said to you in the past. When we look deeper into our self-limiting beliefs, we begin to see the errors in these stories we tell ourselves. We see how we prevent ourselves from stepping into our true selves—Cute and full of light.
When we practice affirmations every day, we not only share words of kindness and love with ourselves, but we begin to believe them. While you may not get an epiphany from any of the affirmations below, I will say this: practice brings hope.
