London (CelebrityAccess) – Leeds-based indie rock band English teacher Winner of the 2024 Mercury Prize for his 2024 debut album This Could Be Texas.
The English Teachers, consisting of Lily Fontaine (vocals, rhythm guitar, synthesizers), Douglas Frost (drums, piano, vocals), Nicholas Eden (bass) and Lewis Whiting (lead guitar), stood out from the fierce competition.
“It has been a very difficult year for the Mercury Prize judges, and the final 12 albums are so reflective of our diverse and rich musical landscape. Everyone was filled with enthusiasm and enthusiasm,” the Mercury Prize judges said in a joint statement announced in the statement.
The awards were presented during a ceremony on Thursday night, where the nominated artists came together to watch each other’s recently recorded performances and celebrate each other’s work before the overall winner was announced.
The event is hosted by broadcaster, author and podcaster Annie Macmanus and 6 Music presenter Huw Stephens and is broadcast live on BBC 4 from Abbey Road Studios.
The 2024 Mercury Prize judges include: Danielle Perry – Broadcaster and Writer; Jamie Cullum – Musician and Radio 2 Broadcaster; Jamz Supernova – 6 Music Broadcaster and DJ; Jeff Smith – Head of Music, Radio 2 & 6 Music; Lea Stonhill – Music Programming Consultant; Mistajam – Songwriter, DJ and Broadcaster; Phil Alexander – Creative Director of Kerrang!/Mojo Contributing Editor; Sian Eleri – Radio 1 Broadcaster and DJ; Will Hodgkinson – Thames Chief Rock and Pop Critic; Sophie Williams – music writer and broadcaster. The jury president is Jeff Smith. The jury will meet on September 5 to decide the overall winning album.
