Jordan Chiles may be in danger of losing her bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics after her bronze medal in the floor exercise was overturned by a review committee.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Saturday reinstated the 23-year-old gymnast’s score from 13.766 to 13.666 after the Romanian team appealed to a review committee arguing that the judges in Monday’s floor exercise should not have allowed the score. Chiles’ coach made the request four seconds into the one-minute window.
CAS agreed with the Romanian team’s view and ruled that Chiles’ final score in the floor exercise would return to the original 13.666 points. Chiles’ coach asked for a review of the difficulty score Monday, and the panel concluded her skills were not properly recognized. An initial score of 13.666 put her in fifth place and off the podium, but later scores were reviewed Boost her to 13.766 He beat Romania’s Ana Bărbosu in third place with a time of 13.700 seconds and won the bronze medal. Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade won gold and Simone Biles won silver.
But while the Court of Arbitration for Sport can resolve disputes over Olympic rules, it cannot force the removal of medals. It will be up to the International Gymnastics Federation to decide whether to strip Chiles of his bronze medal and award it to Babosu.
Following the CAS ruling, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee issue a joint statement Slammed the decision.
“We are shocked by the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling on the women’s floor exercise. The investigation into the difficulty level of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise was initiated in good faith and we believe that accurate scoring can be ensured in accordance with FIFA rules,” ” the statement read. “Throughout the appeal process, Jordan has been subject to baseless and extremely hurtful attacks on social media. No athlete deserves this kind of treatment. We condemn these attacks and those who participate in, support or incite them. We commend Jordan for her integrity both on and off the court and we will continue to support her.
Chiles also posted three heartbreaking emojis on her Instagram Story. In a subsequent story, she wrote: “I’m using this time to stay away from social media for my mental health, thank you.”
Chile will likely compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and win a gold medal as part of the U.S. team that won the all-around event.
