HALESTORM/I PREVAIL – Live at AMP in Bridgeport
Kate Gulag
storm and I win Bringing their untitled joint tour to Bridgeport’s AMP with Hollywood Undead and Fit For A King as supporting acts.
A few months ago, my adult children texted me. “The Hollywood Undead are coming to CT!” A few minutes later: Child’s co-worker: “Did you tell your mom that the Hollywood Undead are coming?” Child: “Yeah.” She replied, “Got it! See you then.” !
Pre-game is a must as the drink prices at AMP are off-putting. A $26.50 cocktail, served in a small plastic cup half filled with ice. $16.95 is the cheapest beer I’ve ever seen. Water $6.50. Drinks are cheaper at Fenway. My kids and I went to a local bar that I love, the Brick & Barrel. The staff were very enthusiastic and took good care of us. We had enough to eat and drink and enjoyed a rare family outing. Went to pay and the bartender said, “You’re all set.” The guy at the end of the bar paid your entire bill. excuse me? A random act of pure kindness? My kids and I are overwhelmed and grateful for this generosity. Our night was already off to a great start!
As we passed through security, the opener “Fit For A King” from Dallas, Texas, was already on stage. That’s walking through a metal detector with your pockets empty. The child passes quickly. I had to be pulled aside and wanded before I got the green light. As attendance was low at this time, we found our seats quickly. We had the back seats, but it didn’t matter since only the back seats and the first few rows were there. That night, FFAK formed a quartet with Ryan Kirby (vocals), Daniel Gailey (lead guitar), Trey Celaya (drums), and thankfully, Ryan “Tuck” O’Leary (bass/vocals).
The orchestra performed eight pieces. Four of their seven studio records featured two singles and six songs. FFAK was on full fire and kicked off with the single “Keeping Secrets”, which caught the attention of fans. Cut from pathBreaking the Mirror is next, followed by two from the hell we create, “Falling from the Sky” and “The End (The Other Side)”. Considering that FFAK also has a high staff turnover rate, the orchestra works well together. They’re a pop-looking hard rock with smooth melodies and unidentifiable growls.
It was loud and in your face, and the band kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the set. Ryan K’s voice is good, but I prefer the non-screaming parts. It was Tucker who kept me wanting to watch the entire game. This bastard sings and plays bass at the same time and still manages to stay at the right height while jumping around the stage. Title track “Deathgrip” is on deck, followed by another the hell we create Cut with “Reaper” and their single “Technium”. The series ends with “When Everything Means Nothing” night. Getting into the metalcore trend? Need a dose of screaming mixed with energetic potential talent? check.
Remember back in 2008 when everyone was going crazy over Hollywood Undead’s song “Undead”? Well, they’ve released seven albums since then! That’s the main reason my kids and I come to the show. We’ve been improvising on them for weeks to get ready. The pit was full, as well as all the floor seats in front of the main aisle. Seats in the upper tiers began to be grabbed by their owners in a polka dot fashion. We weren’t the only ones to see Jorel “J-Dog” Decker (Vocals+), Dylan “Funny Man” Alvarez (Vocals+), George “Johnny 3 Tears” Ragan (Vocals+), Jordon “Charlie Scene” Terrell (Vocals+) , Danny Murillo (vocals +) and Matt “Cat” Olofson (drums).
The band emerged facing outward, masks and hoods long gone. They performed twelve songs from five of the eight LPs. Cut from five Kicks off with “California Dreamin’,” followed by “CHAOS” hotel california Get the crowd jumping after ‘Riot’ closes Notes from the Underground. The orchestra jumped around the stage. Back to the original rhythm of debut album “Everywhere I Go” swan songanother cut from notes With “traitors” and visits american tragedy for “Comin’ in Hot.”
I estimated that the venue was about 40 percent full, but 100 percent of attendees got off at this scene. My kids sang every word of every song. “Another Way Out”, also from notes, leading to a segment of Ramstein’s “Du Hast.” “Ruined My Life” from hotel and turn off “Listen to me now” tragedy Leading to a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” (Hollywood Undead style). Not sure Mr. Cash would approve, but I like it. They closed it with another one tragedy Cut to “Bullet” and then “Undead” that everyone was waiting for.
If you’ve enjoyed the Hollywood Dead before, you won’t be disappointed with their live shows. What I find interesting about them, and the reason for “Vocal+”, is that they switch instruments/positions depending on the song (except drums). They carry six guitars, two each for three guitarists who don’t play at the same time, and two basses.
Michigan Grammy Nomination I win Next on the bill. As co-headliners, their fans increased the venue’s capacity to sixty percent. They had a huge backdrop and stage risers with LED screens splashed with lyrics and beautiful graphics. Looking at the opener there was no such thing, it really made I win stand out. The digital introduction story is a bit too long. The band has three studio albums to their name; traumabasically half real power LP and an infamous cover. nothing from lifeline on this night.
Brian Burkheiser (clean vocals), Eric Vanlerberghe (dirty vocals – aka incoherent growling), Steve Menoian (lead guitar), Dylan Bowman (rhythm guitar), Jon Eberhard (bass) and Gabe Helguera (drums ) stormed the stage and fell down “The fear lies in “letting go,” “body bags,” and “self-destruction.” Their fans ate it up. Then, the IT era came. The cover song increased their popularity and was certified platinum. Their “Blank Space” metal cover. My kids were screaming “Oh my God, Taylor Swift,” and the crowd went crazy. The I Prevail tracks continue with “Deep End,” “Visceral,” “Breaking Down” and “FWYTYK.”
The floor in front of the main crosswalk was 100 per cent full and the fans were obsessed with these guys. I counted forty people at the back of the aisle who were actually paying attention. The album ends with “Judgment Day,” “Suffocation,” “Hurricane,” “Take a Bow,” and ends with “Gasoline.” The band’s live performances are excellent and well-loved by their die-hard followers. I prefer Brian’s smooth vocals to Eric’s dirty incantations, but I realize this is metalcore so you have to combine the two.
We are lucky to see Brian alive as he underwent surgery for Eagle Syndrome in May. A few years ago, he underwent an emergency vocal break after suffering a severe vocal cord injury. I can’t believe that after all these throat issues, Brian is back on stage singing his heart out night after night. Dude is an inspiration and I win The addicts let him know how grateful they were to have him back. Even though I was “meh” about them, my kid immediately added several of their songs to her playlist. Check it out for yourself and see what they think.
Following Hollywood Undead, storm The main attraction for us. I’m excited to watch a great performance by women in rock music with my own daughter. Grammy Award Winner storm Never disappoints and tonight was no exception. Lzzy Hale became the first female artist to win Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance (2012).
storm There are five studio albums, but their ten songs are too short to cover them all. An extended intro showed off Lzzy’s pipes as they launched into “I Miss The Misery” and their Grammy-winning song “Love Bites (So Do I),” both from strange case LP. Lzzy changes up her Gibson guitars like she changes her clothes, shiny silver, shiny pink, and everything in between. storm‘s “I Get Off” contains a perfect segue into Heart’s “Crazy On You.” She thanked her fans: “We’re all freaks tonight!” before going on to another one strange case and “Freak Like Me.”
Lzzy shows off her blues flair but loses some audience momentum Into the wild lifeThe “want to get mine”. The singer dedicated the next track to the band’s biggest fans, namely Freaks or Lzzbians, as well as storm virgin. She showed off more of her vocal prowess with a hauntingly beautiful rendition stormThe “familiar smell of poison”. Lzzy’s companions include Joe Hottinger (lead guitarist), Josh Smith (bassist) and her brother Arejay Hale (drums).
It was Alej’s turn to take the spotlight, as he composed a drum solo that included a set of comically giant drumsticks. Each member of the band ends up on stage playing drums, and the solo turns into a drum circle. Back to business with another person Into the wild life song “Mayhem,” which included an attempt at Eddie Van Halen’s “Eruption.” storm and I win This joint headlining tour was conveniently preceded by the release of a collaborative single, so Eric Vanlerberghe took to the stage to assist on “Can You See Me in the Dark?” “Black Vultures” wrapped in a compact package vicious and “spire” from come back to life.
Definitely eager to hear more, but that’s it, no encores. storm Having been with the same quartet for twenty years, Lzzy’s voice is an asset. We don’t have enough women fronting chaos, so please support them. Lzzy probably has to work a thousand times harder just because she has breasts. like storm? It’s time to take a fresh look at them. new storm? It’s time to bring out your geekiness.
Thank you to all the rock musicians and readers for your support! More coming soon!
