Back in March, I was still only Back there after my marriage ended, I shared two first date outfits…
Here they come. For those very early dates I want to dress casually, maybe a little more restrained? Everything was new and scary to me. But a lovely reader prompted me to be more flirtatious: “I like black jeans, but maybe paired with a black shirt…if there’s a sexy vibe in the air, you can untie the excess.” MDB added: “Look in black Looks like a waiter’s outfit.” Haha, noticed.
But I’ve taken this advice to heart ever since. After dating some handsome gentlemen, and seeing how nice and open people are (especially at the age I’m discovering), I feel softer and warmer as I become more vulnerable – so when it comes I’ll be a little braver when it comes to clothing that shows I care and have tried. (Does this make sense? It makes sense to me.)
On a recent drinking date, I wore a polka dot jersey with Chloé flats I found on eBay. (Dancing arms provided by Anton.)
When I had dinner with a lovely dad at Sailor, I paired the skirt with a white shirt (similar here and here ) and strappy sandals.
At the beginning of this post – on an evening walk – I’m wearing a Levi’s denim skirt that I’ve had for ten years (!), a distressed floral shirt, and a pair of brown sandals from Poshmark.
Fashion can sometimes feel frivolous and irrelevant, but sometimes it really reflects how we feel, our emotional temperature, the stage of life we’re at, all of that, don’t you think? It reminded me of the interviews we did with the costume designers on Girls and Fleabag, and how a character’s clothes reveal what they’re thinking and feeling. Not all the time, but sometimes! Claire! It’s French!
Now, I’m curious: What do you wear when you drink, eat, walk, or watch a movie? What makes you feel like yourself? I’d love to hear it.
PS: The best sneakers for long walks and a review of my first post-divorce date at the Big Salad.
