Eddie Murphy has been married and divorced more than once.
Eddie Murphy’s extensive career has established him as a cross-generational entertainer over the years. There’s even a federal law named after him – not for his own crimes, but for what his character did on screen.
In addition, Murphy is the father of many children and contributes to several charitable projects.
Not everyone is fully aware of the prolific actor and comedian’s relationship history.
Before Eddie Murphy got married for the first time, he became a father
In 1989, Eddie Murphy welcomed his first child, Eric, with his then-girlfriend Paulette McNeely.
A year later, in 1990, he welcomed his second child, Christian, with his then-girlfriend Tamara Hood.
However, neither woman was his first marriage. A few years later, though he met his future wife before Eric was born.
In 1988, Eddie Murphy met Nicole Mitchell. The two will (eventually) form a long-term relationship.
They met for the first time at the NAACP Image Awards that year and hit it off immediately.
Murphy and Mitchell lived together for two years before marrying in March 1993.
That marriage gave Eddie Murphy five children — and his first divorce
Eddie Murphy and Nicole Mitchell have five children together.
The children are Bria, Miles, Shane, Zora and Bella.
In August 2005, after more than 12 years of marriage, Mitchell filed for divorce from Murphy. They finalized their divorce in April 2006.
In 2006, after his divorce, Eddie Murphy dated Mel B – yes, Scary Spice from the Spice Girls. This is where things take a complicated turn.
When Mel B became pregnant, questions arose about paternity. On April 3, 2007 (Eddie Murphy’s 46th birthday), she gave birth to a daughter, Angel Iris Murphy Brown, and her representative stated that Murphy was the father of the child.
In 2010, reports emerged that he was getting to know his daughter. Initially, at least according to Mel B, the connection didn’t exist.
And then there was Eddie Murphy’s second marriage
On January 1, 2008, Eddie Murphy rang in the New Year by marrying producer Tracy Edmonds. Sort of.
About two weeks later, they issued a public statement describing the ceremony as a “symbolic union.” They stressed that their relationship was not legally binding, TMZ reported at the time.
It soon became clear that they were determined to remain friends, not romantic partners. It must have been a weird January.
In 2012, Eddie Murphy began dating Australian model Paige Butcher. Four years later, the couple welcomed their daughter (Izzy) in May 2016.
Two years later, in November 2018, they welcomed a son (Max). Max’s middle name is Charlie, named after Murphy’s late brother.
That September, just two months before Max was born, they got engaged. By all accounts, this engagement has not ended in any of the ways that an engagement ends—by breakup, death, or marriage.
