Valencia James is an interdisciplinary artist from Barbados interested in the intersection between dance, theatre, technology, art installation and activism. Her work explores remote interdisciplinary collaboration, artist-driven open source software tools, and the combination of live performance and immersive interactive technologies. She is currently researching the relationship between performance and play, and how communities draw on traditional Caribbean cultural and spiritual forms for active resistance and problem solving in the face of colonial systems.
Valencia served as an Eyebeam NYC 2020 Rapid Response Fellow and a 2021-2022 Sundance Interdisciplinary Fellow. She has presented work at the 2015 International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2021 SIGGRAPH, and the 2022 Sundance Film Festival New Frontier exhibition.
