Candice Bergen came out rocking it on Sunday night.
She did this simply in a somewhat calm tone.
During the 2024 Emmy Awards, the legendary actress surprised viewers and attendees alike when she took the stage to present her trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Bergen received the honor five times for his role as newscaster Murphy Brown in the television sitcom of the same name.
Before announcing the name of this year’s winner, Bergen blasted Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance while referencing one of Murphy Brown’s most famous moments.
“For eleven years, I’ve had the privilege of starring in a comedy series called ‘Murphy Brown,'” Bergen said in front of a rapt audience, who had just given her a standing ovation.
“In a classic moment, when Murphy becomes pregnant and decides to raise her child as a single mother, my character is attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle.”
Bergen added sarcastically:
“Oh, how far we’ve come… Today, the Republican vice presidential candidate would never attack a woman for having a baby.”
The actress ended her joke with “Meow,” referring to J.D. Vance’s infamous 2021 interview in which he said “cat ladies without kids” were ruining America.
Bergen gained attention for the joke, but also for the way he told it.
Many observers couldn’t help but notice that the star’s delivery was somewhat stilted and slow, sparking curiosity about her health and overall well-being.
Of course, a helpful fact might be that Candice Bergen is 78 years old.
But there was another thing: She had a stroke in 2006.
Yes, that was a long time ago.
But Bergen said in 2012 that the stroke affected her memory and that her memory was no longer “the same” after the incident.
“The reality is I don’t look like I used to,” the actress also said at the time. “I just didn’t care enough, but in a way it saved me.
Bergen emphasized the same point in her 2015 memoir, writing simply:
“Let me get this straight – I’m fat.
“In the last 15 years… I’ve gained 30 pounds. I live to eat. None of this ‘eating to survive’ stuff is for me.
Bergen, 78, lives his life to make us laugh, and all things considered, he’s doing pretty well.
We’re not sure the same can be said for JD Vance.
