Sad news from the music industry today:
Platinum-selling rapper Rich Homie Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died on September 5 at his residence in Atlanta.
He is 34 years old.
Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta notified its staff Thursday of the rapper’s death, the Fulton County Medical Examiner said in a statement.
The cause of death has not yet been announced, but an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
However, TMZ obtained a recording of the 911 call made by the star’s girlfriend on Thursday afternoon … in which she said the artist was not breathing and had no heartbeat.
She also said Rich Homie Quan was unresponsive on the couch at home and began foaming at the mouth when she tried to move him.
The musician came to prominence in 2013 with the song “Type of Way” and is especially famous and beloved in his hometown of Atlanta.
He followed up with fan favorites like “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” “Ride Out,” “Lifestyles” and “Save Dat Money.”
His debut album “Rich as in Spirit” was released in March 2018 and peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The rapper was a member of Young Thug’s Cash Money Records project “Rich Gang” and frequently collaborated with Atanta residents 2 Chainz and Jacquees.
“Dam lil bro we just talked about filming a video,” 2 Chainz wrote on Instagram today after learning of the tragedy. “Special prayers for you and your family and for everyone who is dealing with something. My condolences, brother.
Fellow rapper Boosie also acknowledged Lamar’s reported overdose death in a series of messages posted on Twitter.
“Just spoke to you,” he said from the platform. “#tipQUAN Never forget your smile, the way you talk and of course the music.”
In a follow-up post, Boosie added:
“We have some great memories together that always bring a smile to my face #restupquan and we are cooking some stuff too.”
Lamar has four sons, two with Amber “Leila” Williams and two from a previous relationship. May he rest in peace.
