Fall is hands down my favorite time of year. When I turn the calendar to a new month, it’s all about cozy inspiration and the desire to gather with loved ones. This is the perfect time of year to dive into your reading list and set a strong pace for the rest of 2024 (after all, there are only a few months left in the year!). If you’re looking for things to do in September, trust me: you’ve come to the right place.
30 things to do in September to stay inspired this month
I’ve been brainstorming my September bucket list for a while now, and while I’ve let go of the pressure to achieve it all in 30 days, this is a great starting point to keep me inspired all month long. Below, I’ll share the books our editors are reading, the recipes we’re cooking, and all the intentions we’re bringing to the table for the month ahead. Keep scrolling and get excited for fall—it might be your best season yet.
September 1st to 7th
1. Prepare a Labor Day classic. The best part about Labor Day? (Except OOO?) Food of course! Steal our guide to Labor Day parties—including the most refreshing frosting recipes.
2. Celebrate the unofficial last day of summer. Lounge by the lake, grill, or just enjoy your own company. (Personally, I like to give my house a thorough deep clean.) Do whatever makes you feel your best—it’s your day off!
3. Make your inbox sparkle. One of the best ways I’ve found to combat email anxiety is to inject more joy into my inbox. Check out our list of the best newsletter subscriptions to get even more joy when you sign up. Who knows, you might even look forward to email boot time.
4. Change your lunch schedule. Get inspired by these conscious lunch break ideas for a “real” reset. Oh, and if you’re looking for something new to eat for lunch, Camille’s new favorite salmon recipe is it.
5. Start with one of the best fall reads. We’re bringing you all the best new reads of the season. From memoirs to romance novels to riveting thrillers—fall 2024 books are packed with variety.
6. Join (or start!) a supper club. As someone who loves good food and socializing, supper clubs are one of the perfect ways to talk about your favorite dishes. Learn everything you need to know about starting your own supper club.
7. Visit the flower market. Trust me, there are plenty of flowers to see in the fall. This is one of the most inspiring things to do in September! Another option: Head to your local Trader Joe’s store and browse for flowers—the grocery store has a wide variety of flowers to choose from.
September 8-14
8. Learn to knit. While knitting is a year-round fun, it’s also one of my favorite things to do in September with reckless abandon. YouTube videos are plentiful, or you can visit your local knitting shop and check out their class schedule (many offer in-person and virtual options).
9. Pick up a new fall candle. Is there anything better than lighting new candles that represent autumn? As much as I love pumpkin spice, there are so many other fall scents to choose from. Shop our recommendations for the best fall candles.
10. Plan to update your wardrobe. Transform your wardrobe with cozy knitwear, boots, and fall colors. (Maybe clean out the closet while you’re at it?)
11. Try new fall recipes. Try making homemade pumpkin bread, a spiced latte, or butternut squash risotto. Now it’s time to whip out all your best comfort recipes.
12. Start your annual Gilmore Girls reruns. While the show can take place at any time of year, the New England setting, small-town vibe, and overall sense of comfort are quintessentially autumnal.
13. Try new parenting strategies. Back-to-school season is full of excitement—there are so many new things around us that it feels like a natural fresh start to all the fall fun. But it’s also one of the busiest times of the year. Try these parenting tips to simplify your home life.
14. Host a fall-themed dinner party. Invite friends over for a seasonal feast of pumpkin soup, roasted vegetables, and cider. First time hosting? These dinner party tips will ensure you have a perfect evening.
September 15-21
15. Have a picnic in the park. Wrap yourself up with a cozy blanket and a basket of your favorite snacks and enjoy the fresh air and changing leaves. Don’t forget the hot cider!
16. Start a gratitude journal. As the season of gratitude approaches, reflect every day on what you are grateful for. Don’t like keeping a diary? When you wake up, try saying these positive affirmations in front of the mirror.
17. Decorate your home for fall. Add cozy décor like candles, blankets, and fall garlands to your space. Get more inspiration to freshen up your home from summer to fall.
18. Watch a classic fall movie. Wrap up under a cozy blanket and watch fall favorites like when harry met sally or love story. We share all the best fall movies.
19. Take a walk at sunrise or sunset. Sometimes, all you need is a little fresh air. Go with a friend, partner, or just by yourself. Leave your phone at home and enjoy the changing leaves and fresh air.
20. Create a cozy reading nook. Is there anything better than curling up in a cozy corner with a blanket and a book? Stack pillows to make sure the lighting is just right and leave room for cups.
21. Go apple picking. Spend the day at the orchard and take home a bushel of homemade apple snacks. Pie or crumble, anyone?
September 22-30
22. Explore a cute little town. Whether you live in the Northeast or not, I guarantee there’s a cute little town from another era waiting for you to visit. Get out the map, pack a lunch, and prepare for a road trip.
23. Try a new exercise program. Start a fitness challenge like yoga, Pilates, or an outdoor run to stay active when the weather gets colder. Prefer to exercise indoors? Join a gym or studio – Earn bonus points if you sign up with friends.
twenty four. Try a new craft project. DIY fall decorations like wreaths, painted pumpkins, or fall leaf wreaths.
25. Create a fall playlist. Autumn is all about creating a cozy, quiet atmosphere. I love playing Gregory Alan Isakov, José Gonzalez or Fleet Foxes to set the perfect tone.
26. Change your morning routine. As the seasons change and mornings get cooler, mid-morning exercise may become less intuitive. Instead, focus on your body and mind’s desires. After waking up, try journaling or reading in bed, drink a cup of hot tea, and make pumpkin oatmeal for breakfast. Remember: your body’s needs will change throughout the year – stay open and listen to what it’s telling you.
27. Make a fall Pinterest board. This is my favorite way to spend a few hours. Pour a cup of something warm, light those aforementioned fall candles, and get pinning! Collect inspirational quotes, outfit ideas, and images and videos to express how you want your home to feel this fall.
28. Invite friends over for a potluck dinner. I think the most casual gatherings are often the most fun. Light the tea lights, put on a fall playlist, and arrange a simple bouquet. Let everyone bring their favorite fall dishes to a variety of courses to celebrate the season together.
29. Go to a football match. Whether it’s at a high school, college or pro game, get into the fall spirit by supporting your local team.
30. Schedule a coffee date. Make a list of your favorite coffee shops and cafes in your city. Send a few text messages and put some updates on your calendar.
