By mid-August, my excitement for fall is Very real. I used to resist the urge to light a cinnamon candle or add pumpkin spice to my coffee until At least It’s September, but now when my heart is ready, I’m totally in the fall mood. (I’m just pretending it’s not 90 degrees outside yet). Even though it’s still technically summer, my husband and I joke that our family has a period of time called the “fall soft launch,” which is essentially the transition from summer to fall in our cozy apartment.
This process is slow, steady, Very Exciting. If you’d like to sprinkle some fall decor into your home but aren’t quite ready for fall yet, read on for some easy ways to create your own summer-to-fall transition at home.
change your smell
Perhaps my favorite and easiest way to welcome the season is with scent. It’s easy to light warm cinnamon apple candles during preseason football games chef’s kiss. You don’t have to change any decor to start the transition from summer to fall in your home, but you can slowly start to put away the beachy florals. Place a candle in your entryway or on your coffee table to embrace the spicy woody scents of fall. I also love having a reed diffuser in our bathroom – it’s a nice touch for you and your guests.
Exchange artwork and framed photos
The turn of the seasons is always a good time to check out framed photos and artwork. Updating your photos is a simple and cost-effective way to keep your home looking fresh and vibrant. Maybe you have some summer vacation photos you’d like framed! My transition from summer to fall also involves swapping out some artwork. This season’s brightly colored artwork is replaced by darker, moodier pieces that complement the season.
Prepare your kitchen for cold weather
Autumn is the season to put on an apron and turn on the energy You’ve got mail And whip up a batch of pumpkin bread. I know you can bake year-round, but the transition from summer to fall in our house means getting our kitchen ready for the season. We’re getting our beloved slow cookers and Dutch ovens out, swapping out the dish towels, and getting ready for all the comforting fall and winter meals that are coming. Put away all your summer-themed kitchen accessories like coolers, drink cups, glasses, and anything else you won’t need when the weather starts to get colder. Chili peppers, anyone?
Add dark accents
My summer house has a bright, breezy, fairly neutral feel. As the weather gets cooler, I start adding darker accents like pillows, throws, and accents like trinket boxes and candles. When you’re switching things up in your own home, be sure to stick with a seasonal color palette throughout the space. It’s great to have this new palette not only take you from summer to fall, but fall to winter as well. Braided accessories in dark tones, bottle green, mustard and burgundy are all perfect for fall and winter.
light candle
Lighting is a simple and fun way to change the mood of your home. There’s nothing more romantic than candlelight, especially in the fall. Pick up taper candles and treat them generously! They look great on mantels, dining tables, console tables, and coffee tables. If open flames make you nervous, you can also use battery-operated candles to create a comforting glow. If you prefer something authentic, you can opt for tapered candles in fall colors or even seasonal designs.
Try Mudir Flowers
If summer flowers are colorful, then autumn arrangements are earthy and rustic. Keep an eye out for darker colors and try replacing your flowers with twigs, greenery and pampas. Artificial flowers and stems certainly last all season long and can be used for many years. Arrange fall stems in vases and place them on your mantel or entryway table. They will add lovely seasonal color and texture to any room without breaking the bank.
Make the most of your comfort
We have throw throws on our couch year round, but when the weather gets a little cooler we bring the big boys. I’m talking about faux fur throws, chunky knits, and extra fuzzy throws. Our summer throws are lighter in weight and softer in color, while our fall throws are cozier and in darker tones. Drape curtains over sofas, accent chairs, or hide them in storage ottomans. The cozy throw throw collection is a much-needed accessory for fall movie nights and Sunday football games.
Organize the exterior of your home
The transition from summer to fall can also mean getting outside! While it may be too early for moms and pumpkins on the front porch, you can clear your sidewalks and driveway, pull weeds, clean your gutters, and make sure your front porch lights are working properly. Now is a great time to add fall wreaths to your doors and replace your front doormat. I know our doormats are looking more worn by the end of the summer, but it’s so nice to come home to a brand new doormat.
