Ian McKellen Said his traumatic experience of falling from a London theater to a hospital bed could have been much worse… if not for the baggy clothes he was wearing!
The legendary actor is speaking out about his tragedy for the first time, telling Legend magazine that he suffered a broken wrist and shattered vertebrae in the June incident … but his costume saved his ribs.
As we reported… Ian was playing John Falstaff in London’s West End production of The Players King when he Fell from the front of the stage During a fight scene, he had to be taken to the hospital.
Ian said he used a fat suit when playing Falstaff, and the extra cushioning softened his landing when he fell… protecting his ribs and other joints in the process.
The 85-year-old said his neck and wrist have not yet healed and he does not go out these days in case “someone bumps into me.”
Ian said his foot got caught on a chair on stage and when he tried to break free he kept slipping on other props and ended up in someone’s lap in the front row!
IM also stated that he replayed the fall numerous times in his mind… and that he was ashamed of the whole incident.
