Tuesday night was the fourth time I saw take back sunday I still don’t know any lyrics to sing along to, which might be an advantage for the people standing next to me. The best part about seeing the band live was spending time with my good friend Christian, who has since gotten married and moved to Philly, but still take back sunday’s number one fan. It’s been a minute since we hung out so it was nice to catch up.
The good thing is take back sunday The show is such that you don’t need to know the lyrics to have a great night of music. They always have a lot of energy and the crowd is lively throughout the set. This night was no exception.
The headliners of the night were “S’Old” and “Set Phasers to Stun”. Lead singer Adam Lazzara explained that the giant glowing 152 behind him was for the band’s promotion of their latest album. This number is the Long Island Expressway exit where the band often got off for band practice in its early days. Lazzara wandered around with a wired microphone during “How Does It Feel to Be a Ghost?” Christian told me he saw him break his nose with it at a show. Now I have to pay attention to this. The nose wasn’t broken, but he did have an almost suffocating problem with his neck for a while.
“A Decade Under the Influence” was followed by “Amphetamine Smiles” and the crowd erupted in cheers when Lazzara announced they were from Massapequa. Next comes “You know how I do it” and “Error: Operator”. John Nolan (lead guitarist) took over vocals on The One. Touring guitarist Nathan Cogan delivers a fiery solo on “Liar (It Takes One to Know One).” “Lightbringer” followed, and the crowd sang “You’re So Last Summer.”
Lazzara takes out the harmonica and Logan jumps on the keys for “Divine Intervention,” with Sean Cooper (bass) and Mitch Register (drums) filling in for Mark O’Connell ( Mark O’Connell takes a break here. “Tidal Wave,” “The Stranger,” “My Blue Heaven” and not one but two Happy Birthday songs preceded Intros and “You Can’t Look Back.” After “Move on” and “Flash, fade.”
Lazzara explained that they stopped pretending that we were leaving and then coming back to perform so they could play more songs. The crowd loved the message and it really kicked it up a notch when the band closed with “Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut From the Team)” and “MakeDamnSure.” Christian said he’s seen them about 50 times, somewhere in the middle. As the tour draws to a close, Lazzara’s voice does sound a little strained. For me, this is a top five. Hopefully he can finish in the top five.
national Opened it in the evening and I was impressed. They had amazing energy and put on a great light show for the opener. The crowd was circling in the pit, crowd surfing, jumping up and down. If you see them performing near you, I recommend checking out their show.
