Why do we get neck wrinkles?
“You can thank your genes for some of your neck wrinkles,” says Dr. Geddes-Bruce. Looking back at my own photos, I can definitely say this. However, neck wrinkles can appear over time. They’re not the only sign of premature aging in the neck and front of the neck, either. From sunspots to redness and texture changes, Dr. Geddes-Bruce delves into why our skin changes and how to fix it.
Elizabeth Geddes Bruce, MD
Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon specializing in cosmetic and medical dermatology practices. She believes that cosmetic dermatology goes hand in hand with a happy, healthy lifestyle and regularly provides patients with cosmetic and medical dermatology consultations in a balanced, natural approach.
What dermatologists want you to know about neck wrinkles
“The skin on our necks and front of the neck is particularly delicate,” says Dr. Geddes-Bruce. “The tissue is thinner and there are fewer hair follicles containing stem cells that can trigger healing after irritation or injury. In some ways, it’s closer to our face than the body, but it’s still very different.
Like many topics in the beauty world, neck wrinkles are not without myths. There are many theories about its causes and how to treat it (topical treatments and lifestyle changes).
“The most common misconception I hear about neck wrinkles is that they are related to your overall hydration status,” says Dr. Geddes. “You can’t get rid of neck wrinkles by drinking water, and unfortunately, you can’t get rid of them by moisturizing either.”
What is the real cause of neck wrinkles?
Neck wrinkles “depend on genetics and environmental exposure,” says Dr. Geddes-Bruce. Smokers may develop symptoms in their 20s, while people who are very careful about protecting their skin may not notice them until their 40s. to them.
Other common causes of neck wrinkles include:
- Gravity (proof that aging is inevitable for everyone)
- sun exposure
- pollute
- optical radiation
- smoking
- Overlooked Skin Care Routine
- Repeated actions
There’s a lot of talk about technical neck when it comes to repetitive movements. Will looking down at your phone often cause neck wrinkles? Dr. Geddes says it’s possible, but it hasn’t been studied. “We can look at the location of wrinkles on our face and neck to see if we prefer one side when sleeping. So it makes sense to keep looking down at our devices. Can Helps deepen our neck wrinkles. However, factors such as optical radiation have a much greater impact. Therefore, it might be worth investing in a blue light spray.
How to Treat Neck Wrinkles
Preventative Botox has been around for a while—from your face to your pits. But lately, Trap Tox (aka Barbie Botox) has taken over. The idea is this: By injecting the trapezius area, you can release muscle tension and lengthen the neck. But can it smooth out neck wrinkles in the process?
Some people experience reduced neck lines, but this is not guaranteed. Trap Tox primarily targets the girth and muscles of the shoulders. “Trap tox is primarily used to relieve tension in muscle tissue and, if used at a high enough dose, can help lengthen the neck without changing neck wrinkles,” says Dr. Geddes. There may be other aesthetic benefits, such as definition of the jaw or even the arms, but neck wrinkles are not guaranteed to disappear with this procedure.
Dr. Geddes-Bruce recommends using fillers to address neck wrinkles, depending on the type of neck wrinkle. “Deep horizontal lines respond well to small amounts of ultra-hybrid filler, while wrinkle texture is better improved with laser resurfacing.” If you don’t want to go to the office, red light therapy can be a great alternative to laser therapy.
How to prevent neck wrinkles
A big part of preventing neck wrinkles is consistent and effective skin care. According to Dr. Geddes-Bruce, the golden ingredients are peptides and retinoids. “They are very effective in improving the composition and appearance of our skin in the long term as they help optimize our collagen and elastin fibers.”
You probably already use these ingredients in your skin care routine, so be sure to apply the product to your neck. This is a tip you may have overlooked, but it can make a big difference.
“When you use topical products, including sunscreen, apply them from your face down to your neck and chest,” says Dr. Geddes-Bruce. “This small habit can make a significant difference over time.”
