Filmmaker and design icon Nancy Meyers said in a 2012 interview with ELLE Decor that she treats the houses in her movies like the main characters. Her interiors are an extension of the heroines in her films, and it’s obvious that she put a lot of work into these homes, which are, in reality, just spruced up sound stages. It’s this thought and intention that makes them all the more impressive.

The “Nancy Meyers aesthetic” is having a moment, and it makes perfect sense. Who wouldn’t want to capture some of the joy and lightness her films evoke? After attending the New York School of Interior Design, Joshua Smith began his career under the tutelage of Steven Gambrell. In 2013, he launched his own design firm, and a little over a year later, he was named a “Rising Star” and “One to Watch” by House Beautiful magazine. Over the years, Joshua has built an impressive portfolio, ranging from modern sanctuaries to country estates.
Why are Nancy Meyers’ interior designs so popular?
There’s no doubt that Nancy Meyers’ interior designs are universally loved. They’re cozy, warm, and we want to jump out of the screen and be there, even though her movie sets are designed in a completely different style. “All her interiors speak a different language, but they all evoke the same feeling I want to fall into it.” Smith said. “This is a retreat. There’s just something about them that feels good. Whether the house is coastal, rustic, Californian, cottage or traditional – we get Nancy Meyers cool. We all want a little bit of this feeling in our lives─a i don’t know what She brings it to all her spaces.
The appeal of Meyers interior design is evident when we look beyond aesthetics or the exterior of the home. Smith sees this too when working with design clients. “People don’t buy a house based on its appearance, but based on its essence. Feel Like,” he shared.
How to get the beauty of Nancy Meyers?
Nancy Meyers’ aesthetic isn’t just a look, it’s a feel. “I call it livable beauty,” Smith commented. “You can have a space with a couch, a coffee table, some chairs and a rug that can be put together and styled, but the layering makes it feel like home. I think that’s what Nancy is about Well done place.
So what do the floors of a home look like? “It’s a blanket in a basket, or a stack of books next to a chair,” Smith said. “We think it’s the big things like the sofa that make a house a home, but it’s actually the sentimental items in the center of the coffee table that make it interesting.”
Nancy Meyers’ interiors are beautiful, but she prioritizes emotional connection. The houses in her films are habitable, comfortable, and reflect the personalities of their inhabitants. So when it comes to recreating your look in your own home, imagine who you would be in a Nancy Meyers movie. real! Who are you?
