Trends are changing, and so is the way the beauty industry and even society as a whole talks about aging. Rather than trying to stay youthful forever, we are collectively focusing on embracing ourselves every step of the way. But in a world where anti-aging treatments (invasive or otherwise) are within reach, how do we make sense of who the world wants us to be? Answer: Rituals and routines that make us feel like ourselves the best– No matter what others think about our wrinkles. For me, retinol is an absolute godsend for sensitivities.
Of course I have tried Botox and dermal fillers and when used correctly they can work wonders. But as much as I love its results, I’ve also learned to rely on this graceful aging hero, and it’s a mainstay in my skin-recommended skincare routine. Many experts I spoke to agree that retinol is non-negotiable—and among editors, the much-hyped ingredient is often touted as a miracle worker.

Best retinol for sensitive skin
As amazing as retinol is, it does have its drawbacks. Striking the right balance of powerful ingredients is crucial to getting the best results from your shine. For a little skincare help, we tapped dermatologist Dr. Nancy Samolitis (co-founder and medical director of FACILE Dermatology + Boutique) and esthetician Matthew Miller (whose namesake salon is located in West Hollywood) to answer all our burning questions . From buffers for sensitive skin to the best retinols for every problem, we’ve got it all.
What is retinol?
Retinol is a type of retinoid, a class of compounds derived from vitamin A that increases collagen production and promotes cell renewal. In a nutshell: Retinol is a form of vitamin A found in over-the-counter skin care products.
How Retinol Works
One of retinol’s superpowers is the ingredient’s ability to speed up cell turnover, which prevents sluggish skin cells from becoming trapped in pores (which can lead to inflammation), resulting in brighter, fresher skin.
“The anti-aging benefits of retinol are due to the repair of cell damage and normalization of cells on the skin’s surface,” says Dr. Samolitis. “When cells renew at a healthy rate, skin appears smooth and shiny instead of rough and dull.”
Is retinol safe to use on sensitive skin?
Ultimately, retinol is safe to use on all skin types. However, some small adjustments—like starting slowly or buffering your retinol—may be helpful for beginners. “Retinol has been criticized for irritating sensitive skin,” Miller says. “While this may be true, it all depends on the formula. Prescription-strength retinol A or tretinoin can be a bit strong, which is why it’s important to start slow.
For more sensitive skin types, Miller recommends looking for retinal/retinal. This derivative often delivers amazing results while causing less irritation. “If you’re still nervous, you can use a retinol product first after your moisturizer to buffer it,” he suggests.
potential side effects
While flaking is never pleasant, it’s important to remember that flaking is completely normal when you start using a powerful product like retinol. “Your skin needs to adjust to retinol,” Miller points out. “Initially, some people may experience dryness, flaking, and even some redness. This is temporary, but like said before, be sure to start slowly at first (one to three times per week).
I’m sure we’ve all heard of the dreaded retinol cleanse. Retinol can cause clogged pores and breakouts — proving that sometimes your skin has to get worse before it can improve. For most people, this phase lasts 2-4 weeks, but this depends on the strength and potency of your product.
How often should I use retinol?
As your skin adjusts, you can use retinol every day as long as you don’t see side effects. Of course, this depends on the retinoid formula you use. The best plan of action is to follow the advice of your esthetician or medical professional. Also, be sure to only use retinol products at night, and remember to apply plenty of sunscreen during the day.
In what areas should we avoid using retinol?
Miller says the neck and chest areas tend to be more irritated when it comes to products like retinol or exfoliants, but those areas can still absorb the ingredients. After applying retinol to your face, he recommends using the remaining product on your neck and chest, introducing the ingredient slowly. For the delicate skin under the eyes, look for a less potent retinol formula with a hydrating base.
