William Hurt, the Oscar-winning actor who played General Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022.
The acclaimed Oscar-winning actor is still being honored years later, as evidenced by the tributes fans paid to the late actor after the first trailer for the next Marvel movie debuted, Captain America: Brave New World.
Not only does the trailer confirm that the character has been recast, but that William also missed out on the chance to play a key role due to his passing.
William Hurt’s death
Back in March 2022, William’s family confirmed that he died of natural causes and complications from prostate cancer. He is 71 years old.
The star’s son, Will Hurt, confirmed the sad and unexpected news.
Will Hurt said in a statement: “The Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar-winning actor, on March 13, 2022, short of his 72nd birthday. One week.
“He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, of natural causes.”
Hurt was previously diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to his bones.
Hurt has sons Will and 32-year-old son Samuel with Heidi Henderson.
He also leaves behind son Alexander, 39, of Washington, D.C., with Sandra Jennings, and daughter Jeanne, 28, of Sandrine Bonaire.
William’s career outside of Marvel
The actor first rose to fame in Ken Russell’s 1980 sci-fi film change state… He then found success on the big screen in the 1980s, starring in the following films: Body temperature, freezing temperatures, broadcast news and unexpected visitors.
In 1985, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film. Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Hurt also has a reputation for being in “ Children of the Lesser God, Broadcast News, and History of violence.
Thaddeus Ross and who replaced the role of William
As General Thaddeus “Thunder” Ross, Hurt has long been a key figure in the Marvel Universe.
The character returned multiple times in 2016 as Secretary of State Captain America: Civil War2018 Avengers: Infinity War, And the grand finale of 2019 Avengers: Endgame.
He was last seen in Scarlett Johansson’s breakthrough film, Black Widow.
But clearly, Marvel has big plans for the character of General Thaddeus Ross and can’t continue to play the character after Hurt’s death.
July 12, 2024, first trailer Captain America: Brave New World In his debut, fans got their first glimpse of Rose’s future. The character will now be played by Harrison Ford, who has been elected President of the United States.
The trailer opens with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) immediately commenting on Ross’ new character and look.
“I have to admit, I’m still not used to the new look,” he said, prompting Ford’s Ross to respond, “Me neither. They say [lose] Grow a beard or lose the election.
As the trailer progresses, fans finally get to see Thaddeus Ross’ long-awaited transformation into the Red Hulk.
Now, to be fair, it’s not confirmed that the movie will be faithful to the comics. It’s possible someone else will turn red in Rose’s place…but we doubt it.
Regardless, I hope fans enjoy the character of Harrison Ford as much as they enjoyed William Hurt.
