The body of an American climber missing for 22 years has been found buried by an avalanche in a Peruvian mountain.
Peruvian police say they spotted American climber William StumpfMummified bodies are seen on Friday near a camp in Mount Huascarán, one of the highest peaks in the Andes.
In 2002, William attempted to climb Mount Huascaran, but an avalanche buried him under snow and ice. Police said his body, still frozen, was found about 5,200 meters up the mountain at an altitude of 6,768 meters.
It’s unclear exactly how William was stumbled upon, but police say his body and clothing were preserved by the ice, snow and cold weather… and he still had a California driver’s license.
The image shows William’s body twisted and lying on the ice… still wearing his hiking gear, including some hiking boots.
Mount Huascaran is a popular climbing destination…hundreds of people go there every year with local guides, and it usually takes about a week to reach the summit.
William went hiking with two friends, Steve Erskine and Matthew RichardsonIn 2002, they were buried by an avalanche.
Steve’s body was discovered shortly after the incident, but Matthew is still missing.
