A 13-year-old boy who was apparently brandishing a gun was shot to death by police in New York, and the entire violence was caught on video.
The film opens with three police officers chasing the teen through the streets of the northern city of Utica on Friday night.
Police caught the boy in a residential area and pushed him to the ground. A police officer can be seen standing over the boy outside the house, punching and kicking him as he lay on the front lawn. After a brief scuffle, a police officer shot the young man.
As the chaos unfolded, neighbors filmed the incident with cellphone cameras outside their homes. You could hear their horrified reactions after the shots were fired. One guy screamed, “Oh my God! Yo! He just shot him!”
The teenager was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.
Utica Police Department officials said in a statement posted on Facebook that officers stopped two teenagers as part of the investigation. But the 13-year-old fled on foot and police chased him, and he appeared to have a gun drawn, according to police.
This led to a confrontation and the police shot and killed the boy.
Authorities have now launched an investigation into the police-involved shooting.
