In a speech welcoming and praising the emperor, Charles recounted his past experiences spending time with Naruhito – apparently including fishing together.
“I’m just sorry to say that I haven’t had any better luck with my latest fishing attempts,” Charles shared while reading from a prepared speech. “Pokémon phrase ‘Be sure to catch ’em’
All this may resonate with my grandchildren, but for me, it may be a longing.
It was during this surprising Pokémon reference that William seemed to be holding back a lot of different feelings at once — from laughter to mild embarrassment to surprise — and the internet was quick to take notice.
“King Charles’ reference to Pokémon in his speech is not on my 2024 bingo card,” quipped one user on X (formerly Twitter). Another user joked, “Loved #PrinceWilliam’s reaction to #KingCharles’ #Pokemon joke at the Japanese state dinner.”
Charles also singled out another cultural export from Japan, sharing: “It’s great to know the British stories behind some of the Japanese cultural icons.”
“Perhaps you’d ask me to mention someone who is fifty years old this year. She grew up with her twin sister in the suburbs of London, she’s a self-made entrepreneur, she’s worth billions, and on top of that, she’s A UNICEF child ambassador, Charles declares happily.
Charles’ mention of his grandson made some fans particularly happy. He is the grandfather of Prince William’s three children kate middleton — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 — and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s two children — Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3.
The Economic Times spoke to royal expert Katie Nicholl in Maywho explains why Charles—who is Diagnosed with cancer earlier this year — would love to reconnect with Harry and rebuild a relationship with his grandchildren who currently live in California.
“He desperately wanted to be close to his son again and see more of his grandchildren, whom he had not seen much since they were born,” Nicole said.
“Harry has said that he wanted to be able to reunite with his family during the adversity of his father’s illness. That was clearly his intention,” she added. “My understanding is that the king also wants to rekindle the relationship with his son. He loves his son. He’s a very forgiving man. I think he certainly wants to move on.”
