Despite the obvious similarities between the real-life story and the Lifetime movie, Brandt told the Economic Times, “Some things happen in your life that you don’t want to experience, and you don’t want anyone who cares about you to people experience”.
“I remember when the story came out, I was like, ‘Oh my God,'” she said of the Natalia Grace saga. “To me, what’s interesting about the true story is, this couple, you think you’re in one situation, but it turns out you’re in another.”
“My whole life is taken away like this [premise] And just ran with it,” Brandt added. “Yes, that’s it [about] Couple adopts girl they thought was young – and it turns out [with them asking,] ‘Yeah? Isn’t she? – But this is just a fictional story. This is a different story.
Brandt, who plays the child’s adoptive mother, made a huge contribution to the film’s story as a producer on the project.
“It gives me more permission to really have a say in what we do. I think that’s part of an actor’s job,” she said. “…It’s a team sport. Everyone works together. The ones who really set the tone are the ones who spend the most time there, and that really allows me to do that.”
Brandt believes the secret ingredient in the scheme is her young co-star Chloe Chapman, who plays adopted orphan Gabby.
“I don’t even want to imagine doing this without her. I love her,” Brandt said of the 17-year-old actress. “…She’s also very good…she’s smart, she’s really great and she’s a peer very quickly.”
Despite the emotional plot of the film, Brandt assures viewers that it’s a fun movie.
“I feel like a madman saying this, [but] So funny. It’s not funny, I mean there are some funny moments in it, but I’ll find something funny in anything. It’s been a great journey,” she told ET. “…I love that line of, like, how far can we go? It still has to be believable. It has to live in this world. The ending, I don’t want to give anything away, but you’re like *screams* …..This is perfect for summer.
