Last night was the final round of individual auditions for So You Think You Can Dance, and it’s safe to say that the competition was fiercely. After all, who doesn’t want to be America’s most popular dancer? But before we move on to the next round, we have to look back at the stellar performances from all the dancers who made the cut.
Ari Docher
Ali Deucher, 23, landed some serious cred when she auditioned for “SYT,” including dancing with Katy Perry in Las Vegas last year. But after last night’s show, she added one more project to her resume: a standing ovation from three judges (Comfort Feddock, Allison Holker and Maksim Chmerkovsky) , and earned a spot in the choreography session.
Jaylin Sanders
We have three words: isolation, isolation, isolation. That’s all I thought about after watching Jaylin’s audition.
The judges seemed to agree, with Comfort even shouting out Jaylin’s skills mid-performance. Alison gave Jalyn a “definitely yes,” and Maxime and Comfort joined her, giving Jalyn three “yes” and earning a spot in the choreography round.
Maria Hawkins
Mariyah, 21, first joined the “SYT” family in 2016 when she auditioned for “The Next Generation.” —This is our absolute favorite to watch.
There was some disagreement among the judges when it came to Mariah’s performance, though. Judge Maxim said he wanted to see more of Maria’s personality when she performed, but Allison disagreed. Nonetheless, all three judges gave Maria the thumbs up and sent her to the next round.
Anthony Curley
“SYT” judges rarely don’t want to criticize – that’s their job, after all. But the performance of 18-year-old Anthony Curley was so rare that the judge Comfort was reluctant to give any criticism.
She was joined by Maxime and Allison, with Maxim calling Anthony “the LeBron James of dance” and Allison not wanting Anthony’s performance to end. Needless to say, Anthony got three yeses from the judges.
Lishi Catrill
Lihi brought funk—jazz funk. However, the judges also had some concerns. Maxim seemed concerned about Lixi’s dancing range, although she assured him that she was trained in a variety of different styles of dance. Although Lixi did receive affirmation from three people, Alison made it clear that her “affirmation” did not come easily, and she hopes to see more of Lixi’s performance in the next round.
Julian Camoringa
Twenty-seven-year-old Julian came to the audition with a heavy heart: Growing up in Chicago, he was surrounded by gang violence. He hopes that, through dance, he can help inspire the next generation to rise above their own adversities.
This sentiment was reflected in his performance. Alison tells him she can feel his pain when he dances. Julian received positive approval from all three judges.
juicy aedion
We’re so excited to see Juicy Love take the “SYT” stage for a dazzling drag performance. She brought energy, personality and acrobatics – and she did it in heels.
Juicy received a standing ovation from the judges, with Allison calling her performance “well-rounded.” All three judges answered yes, and Juicy moved on to the next round. Shangtai, stay!
Victor Ramos
Thirty-year-old Victor is about to enter “SYT”. After all, 30 is the upper age limit for contestants on the show. But for Victor, his audition was more than just a last chance, it was a new beginning.
Victor’s performance earned him a standing ovation at the end of the audition, and we can see why. But Maxim wanted to make sure that even at 30 years old, Victor was still willing to learn and accept more. Victor said “yes,” and in return, all three judges said “yes.”
Just like that, the audition was over and all of us dancers moved on to the next round. Next week, these 35 talented performers will move into choreography, where we’ll see 35 actors become 10.
