AMP is proud to premiere “Stone Eyes”This is a shameless new track to the world. Additionally, vocalist/guitarist Stephen Burdick sat down exclusively with AMP to discuss the new release.
AMP: Can you give our readers a brief history of the band?
Stephen: stone eyes Founded in 2014 when Jeremiah and I (Stephen) were in high school. There were just a few kids playing music, and they had a strong love for stoner rock, grunge, and progressive rock. Ten years and a string of albums later, the band’s DNA remains the same!
AMP: Your music transcends many genres. How would you describe your sound?
Stephen: Honestly, I think I would classify the music as alternative rock because, like you said, it does tend to transcend genres. One song might be a ballad, the next a metal song. So yeah, to keep things simple, I just tell people it’s alternative rock.
AMP: “High Frequency Pig” is your new single and we’re premiering it here today. Can you give us some insight into the song?
Stephen: So, “High Frequency Pig” was the first song we wrote with our new bass player, Jacob. It started like most of our songs. We had a riff that everyone thought was “cool,” and we ended up writing a song around it. The actual writing process was pretty smooth as I don’t think the song took more than a few hours to make. Stylistically, I really like “High Frequency Pigs” because it continues our “transcendence of the genre” by implementing post-hardcore elements, which I believe is a first for us.
AMP: How does the band dynamic work?
Stephen: Generally speaking, the formula our band follows is that I (Stephen) come up with an idea/plan, then I present it to everyone, we discuss the pros and cons of the idea, and go from there. That’s how it applies to basically everything – both business and creative.
AMP: Can you walk us through your creative process?
Stephen: The creative process is essentially me coming up with an idea myself, sharing it with the kids, and then we all work on it while everyone contributes their own talents to the idea/brings their own ideas to the plate. For example, on “High Frequency Pig,” there are about six unique riffs in the song. I contributed four riffs, Jacob provided one, and Jeremiah provided one.
AMP: Who was the band’s inspiration?
Stephen: Everything everything. From Katy Perry to John Fahey to Tool. There are no boundaries.
AMP: What do you think is unique about Stone Eyes?
Stephen: what makes stone eyes Uniqueness is what we talked about earlier – the ability to blend many different ideas into one cohesive product (shamelessly I might add). I mean, right now we’re talking about a hypothetical scenario where we make an acoustic folk album with a hip-hop beat. why not?
AMP: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Stephen: If I could collaborate with anyone, it would probably be Dean Ween. He seems like a very cool, down-to-earth guy who has a similar mindset when it comes to the creative process. Why not put a million ideas into a blender and see what happens?
AMP: What do you hope your fans take away from your music?
Stephen: Honestly, I just want people to enjoy it and draw their own conclusions/create their own meaning from what we do. We put a lot of time (and pride) into our products, and the most satisfying part is seeing people’s reactions when it’s all done. That’s what makes music making cool.
AMP: What’s next for Stone Eyes?
Stephen: New music! We have more tracks coming out this summer. We’re also about to start the writing process again, so look forward to new music for the rest of the year. Other than that, it’s just normal gigs, gigs, and more gigs!
