Donald Sutherland, who suffered from years of illness but enjoyed a long Hollywood career, has died. He is 88 years old.
Donald is the father of TV star Kiefer Sutherland, known for roles such as MASH, Pride and Prejudice and Hungry Games Franchise.
His brilliance shone brightly on screen, but privately he battled illnesses ranging from polio to rheumatic fever to hepatitis.

The sad news was reported and confirmed on June 20: Donald Sutherland passed away at the age of 88.

Life is indeed good, but it’s not without its troubles. While the official cause of death has not yet been announced, Donald suffered from a number of illnesses over the years.
Donald Sutherland was born in Canada and barely survived a series of childhood illnesses including polio, rheumatic fever and spinal meningitis. He details his struggles in his book, “Fiction, But Still Real,” which will be published later this year.
His near-death experience in the 1970s
Living into your 80s is hardly achievable. In a 2012 interview, Donald recounted his four-second death from spinal meningitis in 1970.
“I got sick during the filming of Kelly’s Heroes. I came to Yugoslavia to shoot for one day and was out for six weeks.
“They took me to the hospital – I had meningitis.
“They didn’t have antibiotics, so I went into a coma and they told me, within seconds, I was going to die.”
Thankfully, he didn’t, which gave him time to build a career that earned him a Primetime Emmy, two Golden Globes, and a Critics’ Choice Award.
Sadly, he is one of the best actors to never be nominated for an Academy Award. Thankfully, he received an honorary Oscar in 2017.

The 1967 movie “King Kong” launched his career. He then starred as Captain “Hawkeye” Pierce in the 1970 hit comedy MASH.
In recent years, he has become well-known to millennial fans for his role as Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, opposite Keira Knightley. He also played the villainous President Snow in four of the original “Hunger Games” movies.
