Daniel Phoenix Singer performs Vasance |
One of Daniel Phoenix Singh’s performance gestures is his fusion of Bharata Naytam and modern dance genres. His two hands are open like lotus petals, his arms form a long diagonal line, reaching into the air, and his upper body and lower body form a spiral rotation. He wears dark blue pants with turquoise blue pleats on the sides.

Daniel Phoenix Singer Has worked in higher education, dance, queer communities, South Asian communities and in arts practice, policy and funding at local and national levels. His identity lies at the intersection of queer, anti-racist, South Asian, immigrant, artist, and advocate roles in the various communities in which he lives.
In dance practice, Daniel was mentored by Pamela Mathews, whose curiosity led him to switch from a computer science major to a college dance major. He is grateful to Lori May, Harriet Moncur Williams and Karen Bernstein for helping shape his dance sound. India’s Madhavi Mudgal and Leela Samson broaden his perspective on the space of Indian dance forms in the physical, pedagogical and choreographic realms.
He is a single parent of an amazing pair of twins who are his most important teachers and test his improvisational skills every day.
