It’s after Memorial Day, which means it’s summer, which means it’s almost July, which means my birthday is coming up. A few years ago, by chance, I started a new birthday tradition. Here’s the thing…
In late spring, I ordered some colored glasses. I loved the bubbles of blown glass, but I also felt a pang of financial irresponsibility when they arrived. Of course I didn’t need them. Can’t I just use a regular wine glass I already have? Then I came up with the perfect solution: I could classify them as birthday gifts—gifts from me—and feel interpreted.
Great, right?
Since then, every time summer comes, I pick up something special for myself. It doesn’t have to be expensive or a necessity. One year, I bought a black vintage dress for twenty dollars. I already have a few black dresses, but not the perfect one yet swing-y Hit mid-calf. This dress now hangs in my closet and every time I take it out it reminds me of my 32nd birthday. Another year, I bought several novels at the local bookstore; they stacked nicely on my bedside table, and I always spent that summer reading a good book on the beach.
Love gifts for life.
This year, for gifts, I have a few contenders. Maybe I’ll go back to the only blush I’ve ever wanted to wear, or try a bright lipstick. I’ve had my eye on the GH Bass Fisherman Sandals for a while, but since I want to do a better job of saving money, I’ll probably pick up a cheaper pair on Poshmark. Or I could choose a native plant from a nearby nursery to put on my balcony. It’s nice to see it grow and see how big it gets with my help Next Birthday.
So, let’s play a game: If today was your birthday, what gift would you give yourself? If you’ve gotten into the habit of buying gifts for yourself, what’s your favorite?
